We are moving into an age where artificial intelligence and “smart” machines are becoming more and more ubiquitous.  With innovations having already arrived and on the horizon (such as autonomous vehicles and financial robots), AI and other technologies are set to pervade all industries and sectors from financial services, retail, commercial, manufacturing, healthcare, consumer affairs and the legal industry itself.

Areas as diverse as contract, tort, competition and employment law will all be impacted in the very near future.  Inevitably, questions will arise about the determination of liability when an AI application or decision causes some kind of harm, injury or financial loss.  What obligations, whether ethical, moral or legal, do these machines or their manufacturers or owners have?  And new technologies will impact not just on substantive legal issues but also on how businesses and professional practices operate.  It is vital that lawyers, economists, businesses and governments tackle these matters today given the speed of the development and introduction of these technologies.
